DRC Success Story: Cade's Graduation Milestone

Graduating from any program is a significant milestone, but for individuals with dyslexia, it can present unique challenges. Dyslexia, a learning disorder that affects reading, writing, and spelling, often requires tailored strategies and accommodations to succeed academically. When a dyslexic student graduates from the Barton Reading and Spelling System, it’s a huge accomplishment. It means that they now have the tools and skills they need to read and write independently. For the first time, they can say they are reading at or above grade level. They are reading among their peers, which is something that our students struggle with. Dyslexia Reading Connection is so excited to celebrate when a student graduates from the Barton Reading and Spelling System.

Cade graduated from the program in February 2024. It’s fantastic to hear about his positive experiences and growth at DRC. Here are the survey questions we asked Cade and his mom, Lindsay, along with their responses.

Cade’s Responses:

How has tutoring at DRC helped you?

“It has helped build independence and confidence in my reading.”

Did you want to quit? If so, why?

“Never! I didn’t want to quit because I knew it was worth the effort.”

You stayed; aren’t you glad you did, and why?

“When I first got diagnosed with Dyslexia, I felt like I was alone because I didn’t know anyone else struggling like I was. Once I began at DRC, I got to meet and interact with other kids that were just like me, and that helped me. I knew I wasn’t alone and different; lots of other kids deal with it, too.”

Is there anyone you would like to thank? Who? Why?

“I want to thank Miss Jeri, my tutor, for all of her patience with me. Also, my parents and grandparents, thank you for your financial support and help in bringing me to lessons.”

What advice would you like to give to other students tutoring at DRC?

“Don’t give up! It’s worth it in the end. All of the hard work pays off!”

Lindsay’s Responses:

How long did it take you to start to recognize that the program was having a positive effect on Cade? What positive effects did you see?

“The first week of tutoring. My son cried every day in school before starting DRC. It has been years, and he hasn’t cried a day since starting DRC! He used to love learning but hated reading books… now every day, anytime he has a moment, you find him with his nose in a book!”

Did you ever consider pulling Cade from the program? Why did you endure?

NEVER! DRC changed Cade’s life so much in a positive way; there never was a question about whether to continue with the program.”

How is school going for Cade now?

“Amazing! He loves learning and is able to do school work independently!”

If you were to go back to the beginning, would you make the same decision to enroll your child at DRC?

“Absolutely!”

Any advice to prospective families? Current families?

“Stay the course! It’s totally worth it and the positive effect it has on your child will be lifelong!”

The transformative impact that DRC had on Cade's learning journey emphasizes the importance of support, perseverance, and the right resources in overcoming dyslexia. Graduating as a dyslexic student may present unique obstacles, but with the right support, strategies, and mindset, it is entirely achievable. By accessing support services, developing effective study techniques, utilizing assistive technology, advocating for oneself, and celebrating achievements, dyslexic individuals can successfully navigate their academic journey and emerge as confident, capable graduates ready to embark on the next chapter of their lives. Remember, dyslexia does not define your abilities or limit your potential – it's just one aspect of who you are. With determination and perseverance, you can overcome any challenge and achieve your goals.
